Best Cocktails for Fat Tuesday

It’s Fat Tuesday! Bring the Mardi Gras spirit into your home by mixing up any one of these fabulous New Orleans-inspired cocktails.

Hurricane

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces dark rum (WC Recommends: Papa Pillar Sherry Barrel Rum $42.99)
  • 1 1/2 ounces white rum (WC Recommends: Cotton Reed White Rum. $24.99)
  • 2 ounces freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 1 ounce passion fruit syrup
  • 1 teaspoon grenadine syrup
  • Orange wheel, for garnishing

How to Make

  • Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice. Add the rums, orange juice, lime juice, passion fruit syrup, and grenadine syrup.
  • Shake for 30 seconds and strain into a tall, 8-ounce glass. Garnish with the orange wheel and serve.

Strawberry Daiquiri

Ingredients

  • 4 oz. light rum (WC Recommends: Cotton Reed White Rum. $24.99)
  • 1/2 c. fresh strawberries, chopped, plus more for garnish
  • 1 (10-oz.) bag frozen strawberries, chopped
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • Sliced lime, for garnish

How to Make

  • To a blender, add rum, fresh and frozen strawberries, and lime juice and blend until smooth.
  • Pour into two glasses and garnish with lime slices and whole strawberries.

French 75

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces gin (WC recommends: Glendalough “Wild Botanical” Gin $31.99)
  • 1 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • Champagne or sparkling wine (WC Recommends: Aubert et Fils Brut NV $24.99)
  • Garnish: long thin lemon spiral and cocktail cherry

How to Make

  • Fill cocktail shaker with ice. Shake gin, lemon juice, and sugar in a cocktail shaker until well chilled, about 15 seconds. Strain into a champagne flute.
  • Top with Champagne. Stir gently, garnish with a long, thin lemon spiral and a cocktail cherry.

Ramos Gin Fizz

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces gin (WC Recommends: Devil’s Bathtub Gin $29.99)
  • 3/4 ounce simple syrup
  • 1/2 ounce heavy cream
  • 1/2 ounce lemon juice, freshly squeezed
  • 1/2 ounce lime juice, freshly squeezed
  • 3 dashes orange flower water
  • 1 fresh egg white
  • Club soda, to top

How to Make

  • Add the gin, simple syrup, heavy cream, lemon and lime juices, orange flower water and egg white into a shaker and dry-shake (without ice) vigorously for about 10 seconds.
  • Add ice and shake for at least 15 seconds, until well-chilled.
  • Strain into a Collins glass.
  • Pour a little bit of club soda back and forth between the empty halves of the shaker tins to pick up any residual cream and egg white, then use that to top the drink.

Brandy Milk Punch

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces brandy (WC Recommends: Rastignac Cognac VSOP $29.99)
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon powdered sugar
  • 3 ice cubes
  • Cracked ice
  • Freshly grated nutmeg

How to Make

  • In a cocktail shaker, combine the brandy, milk, and sugar with 3 ice cubes and shake until frothy, about one minutes.
  • Strain into a double old-fashioned glass with cracked ice.
  • Sprinkle with nutmeg and serve.

King’s Cup

Ingredients

  • 5 ounces vanilla vodka (WC Recommends: Triple 8 Vanilla Vodka $29.99)
  • 2 ounces pineapple juice
  • 2 ounces coconut syrup
  • 2 ounces lime juice
  • Champagne for topping off (WC Recommends: Aubert et Fils Brut NV $24.99)
  • Yellow, green, and purple sanding sugar
  • Lime slices

How to Make

  • Add the colored sugar to one plate. Pour a little coconut syrup into another plate. Dip the rim of the glass into the syrup, then into the sugar, coating the rim completely.
  • Add the vodka, pineapple juice, coconut syrup, and lime juice to a shaker filled with ice.
  • Shake well and pour into prepared glasses.
  • Top off with champagne.
